Writing/editing

My predominant interest is music – classical music in particular – and musicians. But I’m not a critic – I don’t write reviews of concerts or recordings.

Most of my writing is for Classical Music magazine.  I’ve interviewed composers like Steve Reich, Brett Dean, Harrison Birtwistle; performers like Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Kyung Wha Chung, Truls Mørk, Richard Tognetti and Vladimir Jurowski; I’ve profiled groups such as Aurora Orchestra, Spira Mirabilis, the English Symphony Orchestra and the Aldeburgh World Orchestra. And I’ve had articles on a range of subjects published by the Guardian and magazines such as The Strad, Music Teacher and Early Music Today.

Articles for the Guardian

Alfred Deller: A voice from the past

String quartets: ’til death us do part?

Opinion pieces for the Strad

The media was too quick to condemn Kyung Wha Chung

Is playing a concerto really the ultimate test of musicianship?

Should music tuition revolve around passing exams?
